Multivitamin/mineral supplements are considered by most to be the starting point for nutritional supplementation. Multivitamins are beneficial because we know that the modern diet is lacking in key micronutrients and because domesticated vegetables and fruits are less nutrient-dense than their wild counterparts. Deficiencies in the micronutrients found in multivitamins are thought to be associated with the development of the chronic diseases that plague modern man. In addition to a multivitamin, the best evidence suggests that we should also supplement with additional magnesium and vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, and probiotics.
