A UNIQUE HISTORY
What do you know about your supplement manufacturer?
At Anabolic Laboratories, we believe that it is important for you to know who is manufacturing nutritional products for you and your patients. To facilitate the understanding, health care practitioners are welcome to schedule a visit at our Irvine, CA and Colorado Springs, CO manufacturing facilities. Visualizing the manufacturing process in action is an experience that changes how doctors view nutritional supplements. Within the Quality Standards link at the bottom of every page, we have done our best to give you the feel of actually being in the laboratory and manufacturing plant.
Company Information
Facilities
Anabolic Laboratories manufactures nutritional products in two state-of-the-art facilities in Irvine, CA and Colorado Springs, CO, which total more than 325,000 square feet of manufacturing, laboratory and warehouse/distribution space.
Both the Irvine and Colorado Springs facilities maintain US FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) registrations, which include our in-house pharmaceutical laboratories capable of quality control testing to guarantee label claims. The extensiveness of our laboratory testing is described in great detail within the Quality Standards link at the bottom of every web page. Very few nutritional product manufacturers apply the same level of quality control or regulatory oversight to nutritional supplement manufacturing.

Company History
The genesis of “whole food encapsulation”
In early 1920’s, Dr. J.W. Wigelsworth developed the concept of nutritional supplementation when a patient refused to eat the food that would provide him with needed nutrients. Dr. Wigelsworth dehydrated vegetables and reduced them to a powder that was placed into capsules. His patient dramatically improved, which led to the encapsulating of dehydrated vegetables for other patients.
As Dr. Wigelsworth began to develop new formulas, he enlisted the aid of his engineer brother, A.E. Wigelsworth, to invent new devices for processing vegetable supplements to keep up with the growing demand. They decided to form a company and sell the new dietary supplements to health care practitioners.
The building of the “Anabolic” company
During the 1920s, the term “anabolic” was widely used by the founders of the scientific study of metabolism such as Von Warburg, Theorell, Szent-Györgyi, Krebs, Corey, Keilin and many more. During this period, the word “anabolic” referred to metabolic processes that “built up” or supported organs and tissues. In the clinical context, prior to the advent of anabolic steroids, “anabolic” equated to a health restorative process.
Thus, the Wigelsworth brothers decided to use the term “anabolic” as the descriptive name for their new company to emphasize the health restoration aspect of healthy food. And so, Anabolic Foods was founded in the rich farmland outside of Chicago, Illinois in 1924.

Anabolic Foods began to concentrate active components of natural foods as research unfolded showing that specific components of foods could prevent diseases. Due to the potency of these new “nutritional support products” the company focused on supplying products exclusively to doctors who would insure that products were taken properly and worked effectively. This approach continues today as we exclusively distribute products to health care practitioners.
Nutrition manufacturing to pharmaceutical quality
In the early World War II years, there was a demand for dehydrated vegetables. Anabolic Foods was among the nations leading manufacturers, and became essential to the War effort. Large government contracts were awarded to Anabolic Foods and along with them came many federal inspections and audits. In addition to manufacturing dehydrated vegetables, Anabolic Foods began to manufacture pharmaceuticals (such as narcotic lozenges for wounded soldiers) under government contracts. At this point, Anabolic began to transition into a supplement and pharmaceutical manufacturer.

In the 1930s, Anabolic Foods took on a voluntary process in which every raw material was tested in house before being used in production.
Although this led to backorder issues, the quality could be guaranteed. Even today when a backorder occurs, it is commonly due to a raw material testing issue. In other words, Anabolic Laboratories has produced pharmaceutical made nutritional products for decades longer than most nutritional companies have been in business. Not surprisingly, Anabolic Laboratories is the best in the business when it comes to standardizing and concentrating natural products.
The next generation in nutrition manufacturing
Up until the early 1960s, Anabolic Foods exclusively manufactured supplements as capsules because tablets were mostly indigestible to the point of being visible on x-rays. It took nearly two years of trial and error to develop a natural coating and a consistent “disintigration” for tablets. After developing a proprietary manufacturing process, Anabolic successfully converted most of its products into tablets.
Anabolic Foods also pioneered unique delivery systems. The first was a controlled beadlet delivery product that was developed in conjunction with Merck pharmaceuticals. This technology continues to be applied today in Anabolic Laboratories’ Tri-Iron, Tri-C-500, and Tri-B-Plex.
Today, Anabolic Laboratories continues to lead the field in technological innovation and manufacturing excellence. We have grown from a farm in northern Illinois producing whole food supplements with a handful of employees in 1924, to several hundred employees in our California and Colorado facilities. We are proud to be entering the fourth generation of the family, as the great grandchildren of Dr. Wigelsworth still own and operate the company today.
Our commitment to the health care professional
Since 1924, Anabolic Laboratories has remained committed to providing our nutritional products exclusively to health care professionals. Our focus is to provide the highest quality nutritional products and to ensure total clinical satisfaction. We are able to realize this commitment and focus because Anabolic Laboratories is the only manufacturer of “pharmaceutical made” nutritional products that directly distributes products to health care professionals.
